How to get rid of browntail moth caterpillars!

Many of us are seeing masses of browntail moth caterpillars inching about our yards as of recent. If you had to opportunity to treat the large nests in the spring you might not be seeing this, but if you didn’t here is how to remove the caterpillars now from Maine.gov.

  • A wet/dry vacuum with a HEPA filter and filled with a few inches of soapy water.

  • Keep outdoor lights off at night during the last week of June to the first week in August

  • Learn to recognize and avoid skin contact with caterpillars. A key feature is two orange dots on the tail end.

Remember to cover up! As we all get outside to enjoy these beautiful Maine summers, make sure you do not get exposed to the browntail moth hairs. When working to remove them Maine.gov recommends wearing:

  • Long sleeves

  • Long pants

  • Goggles

  • Dust mask/respirator

  • Hat

  • Disposable coveralls

Be safe!
